Civil Mediation Training

40 hours of hands-on training approved by the State Court Administrative Office.

The Dispute Resolution Center of Washtenaw and Livingston Counties is pleased to announce two Mediator Training sessions:
  • Nov. 3-5 & 10-12
  • Feb. 12-16 & 19-22, 2007
The lead trainer is Susan Butterwick. This class is designed for people wishing to complete the training requirements of Michigan Court Rules MCR 2.410 and MCR 2.411 for designation as a Civil Court Mediator or to be trained as a volunteer mediator to work with The Dispute Resolution Center.

Special emphasis will be given to the understanding of the Mediation Process and its place within the ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) structure. Elements of the program include the nature of conflict, facilitative method of dispute resolution, understanding values and relationships embedded within the dispute resolution process, ethical standards of practice, the role of the mediator, creating safe harbors and how to bring about mutually satisfactorily solution(s).

Specific topics include:

  • measuring mediation readiness,
  • process explanation,
  • using neutrality to draw out information,
  • framing issues,
  • confronting destructive behaviors,
  • facilitating and crystallizing negotiated agreements and
  • assisting parties in evaluating the fairness of each proposed solution.

In addition, understanding and attending to the administrative details of the mediation session both settled issues as well as unresolved issues.

Special Note: The Dispute Resolution Center has approved mediators and allows people who take the class to do the observations with them at no additional cost.
